‘Chasing dreams’

Posted

A Michigan man is on his third crossing of the country and passed through Tipton Thursday, May 2, day 50 of his 3,000 mile journey. As of last week’s pass through Tipton he has raised more than $259,000 for the Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund which assists injured veterans and their families with living expenses. The charity is headquarters in his home state.

Jack “Jax” Huffman, of Center Line, Mich., began his journey March 14 in Dana Strands Beach, Calif. He his pushing his gear in a wheeled-cart, and plan to cross 13 states on the way to Washington, D.C. To beat the record for a solo transcontinental walk, he needs to average more than 55 miles a day.

The odds facing him to this point have included crossing the Rocky Mountains, the dessert, the Great Plains during the stormy season, dodging traffic and numerous encounters with wildlife. Huffman has the support of several sponsors on this walk.

This is his third cross-country trek, having completed a 2,841-mile walk in 79 days in 2019 from Newport Beach, Calif., to Tybee Island, Ga., for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. In 2023 he travelled on foot, carrying a dove named “Nikki” approximately 1,700 miles in 62 days from Sarasota, Fla., to the Salute Our Warriors event in Rochester Hills, Mich. In 2020 he he walked 262 miles in six days from South Haven, Mich., to Port Huron, Mich., for  St. Jude’s. In 2022 he made another journey across his home state, walking from Bell Isle, Mich., to Mackinac Island, 362 miles in 10 days for the D-MAN Foundation, an organization that assists families and individuals living with physical and mental disabilities, also located in Michigan.

“I am very grateful and thankful I’ve been able to chase my dreams in life because our veterans has fought for our right to live freely,” said Huffman.

Countless veterans hearing about his walk have stopped him along his route in or near their communities to thank him for his support.
