Bring home first state championship in Cardinal basketball

The Tipton Lady Cardinals got done what they came to accomplish, bringing home the Class 2 State Championship trophy after defeating Bishop LeBlond 55-36 Saturday, March 11, in Springfield.

Cardinal fans were not lacking, cheering on the  Ladys to a victory With Myra Claas putting up 23 points and Briar Cox collecting yet another double double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Bishop was not able to get the shots in they needed, not being able to get past Tipton's defense that has proved to be "unstoppable" this season.

After falling to Bishop LeBlond earlier in the season and losing their first place state rank, Tipton knew they wanted a rematch where it counted, at the state games.

Coach Jason Culpepper knew the Ladies deserved this win and title, as they have put in the hard work the last four years.

"LeBlond is a tough team to defend," said Culpepper. "But we were able to make it past and end the season the way we wanted."

Myra Claas thought her season came full circle, starting her freshman year with the first trip to state and ending in second, then ending her last game of her high school career with a steal and breakaway layup to end her, and her teammates, with a state title.

Tipton's basketball program has only been to state three times, once for boys  50 plus years ago and three times for the Ladies. This is the first state title for the program!

Make sure to catch this week's issue of The Tipton Times for the full article of the state title journey for the Ladies and coaches.
