The fifth seeded Tipton Lady Cardinals move on to the second round of the Class 2 District 12 Tournament after defeating Skyline, Wednesday, Oct. 21, in five hard, fought sets. The win was for the history books as it was the first over Skyline for the Tipton volleyball program.
The first set of the game went to Skyline 25-20. Tipton attempted to make a comeback, but they had a trouble keeping the power serves and hits under control.
The Lady Cardinals started with a power problem again in the second set, but managed to take the lead eight rotations in and keep the lead to take the 25-18 win.
The third set also went to Tipton, 25-23, securing the lead at 11-10. Lead changes went back and forth a couple times before ending the match .
Skyline claimed the fourth set, 25-17, taking the lead early in the match.
The last set determined the winner. Kaylee Kuschel was on a roll with her power spikes and Paityn Whisler found her spot on the court almost everytime she needed to be in the back row, rather on her feet or moving low on the ground to get the dig.
After five ties, and Skyline leading most the match, by only one point, Tipton claimed the 15-13 victory with an ace by Whisler, landing right inside Skyline's court.
The Tipton Ladies played as a team and did a great job talking to each other. Mistakes were made, but they were able to come back from each and everyone.
The Lady Cardinals will play against the first seeded Cole Camp Lady Bluebirds at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at the Stover Dome. Admission is $6 per person six years of age and older. The game can be purchased at MSHSAA.org to watch as well.
The championship game will be played at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, at Stover. Still in the tournament with Tipton and Cole Camp are Stover, who defeated Windsor, and Warsaw, who defeated Eugene.
