Voters may see different district on Nov. 3

Moniteau County voters, who cast their ballots in the new Fifth Congressional District in August, could be voting in the Third Congressional District in November.

Likewise, Morgan County voters, who voted in the Fifth Congressional District in August, may be voting in the old Fourth Congressional District in the general election.

The Missouri Secretary of State Thursday, Sept 10, instructed all county clerks and election authorities to use the 2022 Congressional map due to the ruling of the Missouri Supreme Court.

For now, voters who cast ballots in the 2025 Fifth Congressional District Aug. 4 will cast ballots in the old Third Congressional District Nov. 3.

Secretary of State Denny Hoskins was also held in contempt by the Missouri State Supreme Court for failing to certify an initiative petition to place the redistricting issue on the August ballot, but has subsequently issued a statement directing use of the 2022 district map for the Nov. 3 general election.

As a result, Moniteau County Clerk Roberta Elliott and other county election officials find themselves in a quandary, with military absentee ballots to be mailed out Friday, Sept. 18.

Elliott further suggested voters might want to hold off on filling out absentee ballots in case the Missouri State Supreme Court’s ruling is overturned by the United States Eighth District Court of Appeals.

Republican Congressional candidates Bob Onder (Third District) and Rick Brattin (Fifth District) have appealed the State Supreme Court’s ruling to revert back to the 2022 Congressional map.

There are also questions as to the legality of voters casting ballots in one district in the primary and another in the general election.

Elliott said her office will keep voters updated on any related court cases.
